The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jesse L. Bishop (ASN: 0-2262256), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 and 6 March 1951, in the vicinity of Kachon-ni, Korea. Company F was attacking high ground north of Hill 778. With total disregard for his own safety Lieutenant Bishop advanced to exposed terrain under heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire to place closer support of his mortars on enemy positions during the attack. As a result of his actions heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy. Later when Company F was ordered to attack Hill 982, the attacking platoons were pinned down by heavy enemy fire. Realizing that mortar fire could not be placed effectively upon the enemy from this position Lieutenant Bishop advanced forward towards the enemy to place his mortar in an advantageous position. Through his efforts two machine guns were destroyed, enabling the platoons to move forward and secure the objective. The gallant conduct displayed by Lieutenant Bishop reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
