Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 344 (July 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph J. Binkoski (ASN: 0-2000954), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 March 1951 in the vicinity of Yul.sil-li, Korea. On that date Company E had the mission of securing a high hill from a well-entrenched and numerically superior enemy force. During the advance the company suddenly came under intense enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire. Observing that fire from a well-concealed enemy machine gun was stalling the advance, Lieutenant Binkoski, with utter disregard for his own safety, left his position of cover to dash across an open field through the enemy fire. Upon reaching the mortar section of his platoon, he immediately directed intense fire upon the hostile machine gun position, completely annihilating it. This action dispersed the enemy and inflicted heavy casualties upon him, enabling the company to continue its advance. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Binkoski reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 736 (November 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph J. Binkoski (ASN: 0-2000954), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 May 1951 in the vicinity of Kunmul-gol, Korea. On this date Company H was completely surrounded by a numerically superior enemy force. When it became apparent that friendly units could not withstand the enemy attack from their present positions, Lieutenant Binkoski organized the men into a skirmish line. Taking the position of greatest danger, he led the men forward in an attempt to break through the enemy siege. The initial attack was halted by a heavy volume of hostile automatic weapons and grenade fire in which he was seriously wounded. In spite of his painful wound, Lieutenant Binkoski immediately reorganized his men and once again led them in the assault. Inspired by his courage and leadership the men of his unit successfully accomplished their mission with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Binkoski on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
