Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 285 (July 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Weyland Billingsley (ASN: RA-6269687), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 16 to 23 May 1951, in the vicinity of Kunmul-gol, Korea. On 16 May 1951, Sergeant Billingsley with three linemen left his battalion headquarters to check the lines to a rifle company. In so doing, they were ambushed and forced to take cover, While two were wounded, Sergeant Billingsley and one comrade successfully escaped the attack but were entirely cut off from the unit. They remained on a hill for six days and nights withstanding aerial strikes and friendly artillery barrages, On the seventh day, Sergeant Billingsley and his comrade made their way through enemy lines and joined a group of friendly forces while escaping. He then led medical aidmen back to the two wounded comrades. Though exhausted by the long exposure, Sergeant Billingsley did not permit himself to be evacuated until his two wounded comrades had been recovered. The gallantry and devotion to his comrades demonstrated by Sergeant Billingsley reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
