The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Donald E. Berger (ASN: 0-2021194), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951, in the vicinity of Chajakchong, Korea. On that day he was a forward observer with Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, and was with the lead platoon in the attack on Hill 1001. As the platoon advanced toward the enemy it came upon a large rock which lay across the trail. The first man to climb over the rock was fired upon by enemy machine guns and the remainder were pinned down. Hostile weapons commenced firing until the entire area was under fire and the platoon’s advance was halted. Realizing that further advance was impossible and that the only way to neutralize the deadly fire was to bring artillery fire in on the unseen gun emplacements, Lieutenant Berger, with complete disregard for his personal safety, climbed the rock trying to locate the hidden emplacements. The fog was so dense that he decided to call in the artillery and adjust it by sound. While engaged in this action he was mortally wounded. Lieutenant Berger’s gallantry and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. [This award supersedes the Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Donald E. Berger per General Order 490, this headquarters, 28 August 1951]
