Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 653 (October 31, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Leonard Berg (ASN: US-56080036), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Tumil-li, Korea. On this date Company E was engaged in a fierce battle with a fanatical enemy force. Sergeant Berg, a platoon leader, repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to provide effective supporting fire for attacking elements. During this action, a fanatical enemy counterattack forced his men to withdraw. Sergeant Berg reorganized his platoon and elements of an adjoining unit, and led them forward to engage the numerically superior enemy force. His aggressive leadership inspired his men to ferociously assault the hostile forces and repulse them from their positions. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Berg on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
