The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William A. Benson (ASN: US-55034616), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date Company A was attacking a vital enemy-held position. Due to numerous friendly casualties, Corporal Benson, platoon runner, assumed the position of assistant platoon leader in addition to his assigned duties. In an effort to maintain contact within the platoon, Corporal Benson continuously exposed himself to heavy mortar and small arms fire. During the ensuing action he confronted a group of enemy soldiers attempting to destroy the left flank of the company. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Corporal Benson engaged the enemy, inflicting numerous casualties upon them, until he was painfully wounded. His actions were directly responsible for repelling the enemy’s attempt to infiltrate friendly lines. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Benson on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
