Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 81 (October 28, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Alfred T. Beaver (ASN: 0-385215), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Sangnigah, Korea. On that date his entire battalion was cut off during a general offensive launched by numerically superior enemy forces, and was in danger of annihilation if the escape route through Sangnigah could not be recaptured. Captain Beaver organized a small task force, and with the aid of four tanks, counterattacked the village of Sangnigah, recapturing it and the surrounding high ground and held it until the remaining units of the battalion had withdrawn to a secondary line of defense. He then directed a holding action, and eventual withdrawal of his forces and the evacuation of all friendly wounded. When he reached the new battalion position, although severely wounded, he continued to direct the defense until ordered to the rear. The gallantry and heroic conduct of Captain Beaver throughout this operation were such as to reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
