The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Robert Allen Beard (ASN: 0-2212047), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. At approximately 2000 hours on that date his company was attacked by an overwhelming enemy force. Friendly rifle troops from other companies moved through the mortar platoon of Company H, and established defensive positions in the rear. The mortar platoon received orders to withdraw to the hill directly in the rear, and did so, establishing a defensive perimeter. Lieutenant Beard, completely disregarding his personal safety, moved from man to man through the darkness, encouraging each man individually, placing his men in defensive positions, and assigning target areas and fields of fire. The enemy struck suddenly and with great force, subjecting the platoon to intense heavy weapons and small arms fire. During the fierce engagement Lieutenant Beard received a serious chest wound, but refused medical aid and continued to direct the defense of the perimeter until enemy pressure forced the platoon to effect a withdrawal. In the confusion and darkness he was left behind. The courageous actions, inspiring leadership, and gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Beard reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
