Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 210 (June 22, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Phillip D. Beall (ASN: ER-35749390), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that date, his battalion was executing a withdrawal. Although the enemy had the road heavily mined and well covered by intense mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire, Sergeant Beall stopped along the road to pick up wounded comrades and loaded them on his vehicle. Finally, he was himself wounded, but continued until the vehicle was damaged by enemy fire. Immediately he organized a group of litter bearers to carry the wounded. In spite of several enemy attempts to ambush the group, he continued to lead the unit until he had reached safety and medical care. Only after all other members of the group had been treated did he accept medical aid for himself. The gallant conduct of Sergeant Beall reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
