Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 119 (May 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Jimmy L. Baxter (ASN: RA-4326908), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Company I was subjected to a savage enemy onslaught which lasted for several hours. At 0630 hours on 15 February 1951 the attack had reached its peak. Sergeant Baxter, observing that enemy grenadiers had infiltrated through the company’s protective fire to effective grenade range of his squad, left his covered position and, under intense enemy fire, dashed the length of his defensive line to warn his men of their peril. He then assumed a vulnerable position facing the oncoming enemy and killed six of them with his rifle fire, thus checking the hostile penetration and causing the enemy to break and withdraw. Sergeant Baxter’s gallantry and selfless devotion to his men reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
