The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Jack W. Bauer (ASN: ER-35719998), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 March 1951 in the vicinity of Tukok, Korea. Company F was attacking a high ridge when its advance was halted by the intense fire of a well-camouflaged and entrenched enemy. Realizing that the fate of the company depended on the immediate resumption of the advance, Sergeant Bauer, a platoon sergeant, daringly and with utter disregard for his personal safety led his platoon in an assault upon the enemy. Skillfully deploying his platoon and so outflanking the enemy stronghold, Sergeant Bauer deliberately exposed himself to the heavy enemy fire in order to direct the attack. Climbing the steep icy slopes he led his men in a final rush on the redoubt and by rifle and grenade fire eliminated the hostile resistance, killing all of the enemy. With the opposition thus silenced under the inspiring and courageous leadership of Sergeant Bauer, his company was able to continue its advance to the objective. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Bauer reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
