The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert K. Bau (ASN: US-56073751), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tally’ong, Korea. On this date Company E had the mission of securing a well-fortified enemy-held hill. As the unit advanced. Private Bau, an automatic rifleman, voluntarily moved to an extreme forward position where he met intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire. Disregarding his personal safety, he laid down an accurate base of fire on enemy bunkers, enabling his squad to advance. When his squad leader became wounded, Private Bau unhesitatingly took control of the squad and from his forward position he was able to continue the attack with utmost efficiency. During the ensuing action, Private Bau was painfully wounded but refused to be evacuated until the unit had secured its objective. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Bau reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
