Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 575 (October 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Eldon L. Barton (ASN: US-56110737), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action from 31 August 1951 to 1 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On 31 August while attacking through mountainous terrain, Private Barton’s platoon was halted by intense automatic weapons and small arms fire from well concealed enemy bunkers. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Barton, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved forward armed with grenades and rifle. He succeeded in destroying many enemy bunkers and inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. He then rejoined his outfit and they continued in the attack. On the following day, his platoon was again halted by intense enemy fire. Private Barton immediately moved forward to the top of a ridge line, completely exposed to enemy fire. He succeeded in attracting the enemy’s attention while the remainder of the platoon advanced and secured its objective. In the act, Private Barton was fatally wounded by an enemy round. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Barton reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
