Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 19 (1951), Amended by No. 67 (March 26, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Cyril Sylvester Bartholdi (ASN: 0-1291216), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 and 1 September 1950 near Changnyong, Korea. On the night of 31 August 1950 overwhelming enemy forces had penetrated our defenses along the Naktong River and were forcing our troops to withdraw. Captain Bartholdi organized his headquarters personnel into a strong point defense group and on two different occasions, selected a new position to which the elements of his unit could fall back and continue to defend the sector, During this action he constantly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire in order to encourage his men, supervise the evacuation of the wounded, and issue ammunition. As a result of his gallant conduct and inspiring leadership, elements of his company were able to join other friendly units, and the enemy’s advance was delayed for several valuable hours. The inspiring leadership and gallantry displayed by Captain Bartholdi reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
