The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Thomas G. Funk, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Lieutenant Colonel Funk distinguished himself in an heroic manner on 23 August 1990, while convoying to Baghdad, Iraq. He volunteered, at great personal risk, to assist and transport an injured United States citizen to a Kuwait hospital for the treatment of a serious and potentially life threatening injury. His actions directly resulted in saving the individual’s life. Lieutenant Colonel Funk’s dedication, initiative and courage during that time of uncertainty and his disregard for his own personal safety reflect great credit upon him and the United States Army.
