The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Malcolm Mark Giblin, United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 3 July 1970. Sergeant Giblin distinguished himself while serving as an aero-rifle platoon sergeant in Troop A, 2d Squadron (Airmobile), 17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division, during a reconnaissance mission in the Khe Sanh Plains, Republic of Vietnam. Discovering an enemy bunker complex, Sergeant Giblin assaulted one bunker with hand grenades. While moving forward with his second man to assess the damage, he came under intense hostile fire and a comrade was fatally wounded. While attempting to recover the fallen soldier, Sergeant Giblin was wounded and forced to seek cover. Refusing medical aid, he directed his men to provide covering fire while they again moved forward to recover the man. After three unsuccessful attempts, Sergeant Giblin recovered the soldier from the open area. Returning to his platoon, Sergeant Giblin directed his men to withdraw to a secure area from theirwhich a safe extraction was executed. Sergeant Giblin’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
