Headquarters, United States Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 2358 (July 27, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) John T. Gray, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Gray distinguished himself while Commanding Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a reconnaissance mission in the Boi Loi Woods. His troop was engaged by a hostile force firing rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons. During the contact, Captain Gray observed a soldier with his clothing on fire. Dismounting his vehicle, he went to his assistance and evacuated him to the rear for medical attention. Then, he led his element in an assault against the hostile fortifications, suffering a wound in the process. Ignoring his own wound, Captain Gray continued with his advance and his troop successfully routed the enemy. Captain Gray’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
