The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Ronnie E. Gordon, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 21 June 1969 while serving as an aircraft commander with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, he received word that elements of the Regiment’s 2d Squadron, which had been fighting all day and into the night, were running low on ammunition and supplies. In spite of a rainstorm that had spread over the contact area, Warrant Officer Gordon volunteered to participate in a re-supply operation. Upon reaching the scene of the engagement, he was directed not to use landing lights because of the close proximity of the enemy troops. Guided only by a flashlight on the ground, he set his helicopter down in the small landing zone. During the night he made four trips to the contact area and helped in lifting twelve tons of ammunition and supplies to the friendly elements. Warrant Officer Gordon’s outstanding courage and determination were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
