The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) George W. Gomoll (ASN: 0-5254547), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 16 December 1968, while serving as Aircraft Commander with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Lieutenant Gomoll had the mission of screening for enemy movement in support of an Aero Rifle Platoon which was making a B-52 bomb damage assessment when the platoon suddenly came under heavy enemy fire from a well-fortified enemy position and the platoon sergeant was severely wounded by a burst of automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Gomoll unhesitatingly volunteered to evacuate the platoon sergeant. Disregarding the heavy volume of enemy fire he skillfully maneuvered his helicopter into an unsecured landing zone to load and evacuate the wounded man. Lieutenant Gomoll’s quick reaction and speedy evacuation are credited with saving the life of the platoon sergeant. After completing the evacuation Lieutenant Gomoll volunteered to deliver re-supply ammunition to the beleaguered platoon. Despite the small landing zone and highly-accurate enemy fire, he was able to complete his mission in an outstanding fashion. First Lieutenant Gomoll’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
