On this date, Lieutenant Gomoll had the mission of screening for enemy movement in support of an Aero Rifle Platoon which was making a B-52 bomb damage assessment when the platoon suddenly came under heavy enemy fire from a well-fortified enemy position and the platoon sergeant was severely wounded by a burst of automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Gomoll unhesitatingly volunteered to evacuate the platoon sergeant. Disregarding the heavy volume of enemy fire he skillfully maneuvered his helicopter into an unsecured landing zone to load and evacuate the wounded man. Lieutenant Gomoll’s quick reaction and speedy evacuation are credited with saving the life of the platoon sergeant. After completing the evacuation Lieutenant Gomoll volunteered to deliver re-supply ammunition to the beleaguered platoon. Despite the small landing zone and highly-accurate enemy fire, he was able to complete his mission in an outstanding fashion. The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) George W. Gomoll (ASN: 0-5254547), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 1 December 1968 while serving with the Air Cavalry Troop of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date in the vicinity of Bien Hoa, Lieutenant Gomoll was engaged in an assault upon an enemy force of unknown size. During the course of the fierce action, Lieutenant Gomoll, although exposed to intense automatic weapons fire, relayed a steady flow of information concerning the enemy’s location and strength to his commander. At one time during the engagement he was called upon to land and evacuate a number of casualties. Courageously, he maneuvered his aircraft through the enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, landed on the edge of a bomb crater, placed the wounded on boar and removed them to a medical treatment facility. First Lieutenant Gomoll’s unwavering devotion to duty and disregard of personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1416 (June 8, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) George W. Gomoll (ASN: 0-5254547), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 18 March 1969, while serving as a pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while Lieutenant Gomoll was flying his helicopter over an enemy bunker complex to allow his crew chief to fire grenades on the hostile positions, the aircraft suddenly began receiving intense automatic weapons fire. Seeing that his crew chief was wounded and the helicopter was heavily damaged, he quickly maneuvered the crippled aircraft out of range of the enemy guns and informed the troop commander of the exact location of the enemy entrenchments. In spite of the fact that the helicopter was in danger of crashing at any moment, he chose to fly it to the nearest evacuation hospital so that his crew chief could receive prompt medical attention. Although his vision was hampered by chemical irritants released in the aircraft when several grenades were hit by enemy fire, Lieutenant Gomoll managed to safely land the aircraft at the hospital. His gallant actions saved a helicopter from destruction and enabled his wounded comrade to be given necessary medical assistance. First Lieutenant Gomoll’s courage and calmness in the face of danger and concern for the life of his fellow soldier were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

    Action Date:

    April 18, 1969

Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1873 (July 29, 1969

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) George W. Gomoll (ASN: 0-5254547), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 18 April 1969, while serving as a helicopter pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while flying in support of the Regiment’s 1st Squadron, he was informed that the friendly ground elements had sustained several casualties who required immediate medical evacuation. In spite of the extremely small size of the landing zone and the firefight that was taking place only fifty meters away, he unhesitatingly set his aircraft down and had the most seriously wounded soldier loaded on board his small helicopter. After flying the casualty directly to a nearby hospital, Lieutenant Gomoll returned to the contact area and again skillfully maneuvered his aircraft into the hazardous landing zone. Although the immediate area was engulfed by smoke produced by a raging brush and grass fire, he succeeded in evacuating several more casualties from the danger area to safety. He then returned to the scene of the fierce battle and made a third successful landing to evacuate the remainder of the seriously wounded friendly soldiers. His heroic actions, performed under conditions to which a regular evacuation refused to subject itself, saved the life of at least one soldier and helped bolster the morale of the friendly ground troops. First Lieutenant Gomoll’s outstanding courage, devotion to duty and deep concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
