Headquarters, United States Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 6974 (December 21, 1966)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Robert W. Garrott, Jr. (ASN: 0-5706832), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Garrott distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 November 1966 while serving as Commanding Officer of an Armored Reaction Force of Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a mission of fire support near Long Binh. Captain Garrott received notice that a truck convoy had been attacked by a large Viet Cong force about 30 kilometers from his camp. He moved his company out with extreme speed and they arrived at the attack site 25 minutes later. He then led his unit directly on the entrenched hostile positions and sent units through the original attack zone on flanking movements. Captain Garrott, while receiving intense hostile fire, directed each of these different maneuvers. When his company had encircled the area from theirwhich the heaviest fire was coming, he personally led his vehicles in search of the withdrawing insurgents. Although his vehicle was disabled, he moved through intense fire to another vehicle, directed the rout of the Viet Cong, and captured many weapons and supplies. Captain Garrott’s gallantry in action against a hostile force was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
