The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Elbridge G. Fish, II, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 12 August 1969, while serving as the S-2, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Lieutenant Fish was a member of a liaison team with the 5th Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. While in a night defensive position, the element suddenly came under a massive ground attack from an estimated battalion of North Vietnamese Army soldiers. As the assault continued, the friendly elements were forced to pull back. Lieutenant Fish directed heavy counter fire against the determined foe, using only his two armored vehicles. As he directed the movement of the vehicles, a rocket-propelled grenade slammed into the command vehicle. With complete disregard to his own safety, Lieutenant Fish dashed to the vehicle in order to maintain communications with his headquarters. Despite the human wave assaults, he continued to engage the enemy with his personal weapon and direct machine gun fire against the onrushing foe which started to surround the two vehicles. When the team had exhausted its ammunition supply, he organized a withdrawal. First Lieutenant Fish’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
