Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 4273 (November 21, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Wilson B. Fields, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 12 August 1969, while serving as an armored cavalry assault vehicle commander with the 919th Engineer Company, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, a base camp came under fire from enemy rocket, mortar and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force which also launched a determined ground attack. Sergeant Fields moved his armored vehicle toward the bunker line where thirty sappers were attempting to penetrate the perimeter. Suddenly two rocket-propelled grenades slammed into his vehicle, critically wounding him and two other crew members. Despite a broken left arm, Sergeant Fields continued to fire the machine gun, eliminating several rocket grenade teams. He administered first aid to an injured man, saving his life. Sergeant First Class Fields’ actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
