The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Daniel J. Fick, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 13 May 1970, while serving as Air Section Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Captain Fick was flying the Squadron Command and Control Helicopter conducting aerial reconnaissance and lending support to Troops F and G who were maneuvering through the dense jungle five miles northeast of Snoul, Cambodia. The ground forces encountered an estimated regiment-size North Vietnamese Army force, who were equipped with rocket-propelled grenades, small arms and automatic weapons. It was imperative that the Squadron Commander make quick and decisive actions, so Captain Fick with complete disregard for his own safety flew at treetop level to allow the Squadron Commander to observe the enemy and pin point their locations. Though his craft was receiving intense anti-aircraft fire, Captain Fick maneuvered and evaded to allow the Commander to adjust artillery and air strikes. He provided the best vantage point from which the Commander was able to control the ground elements while still practicing evasive maneuvers from the enemy’s weapons. Captain Fick’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
