The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Colonel (Armor) Roy William Farley (ASN: 0-27543), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Colonel Farley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 May 1967, while serving as Commanding Officer of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment on an aerial reconnaissance mission over the dense jungle that flanks National Highway ONE in South Vietnam. As his helicopter proceeded over an area of thick vegetation, Colonel Farley alertly observed a cloud of smoke rising from the highway several thousand meters ahead. Reacting instantly, Colonel Farley directed the pilot to proceed to the scene to render assistance and direct the ground elements that had encountered a reinforced battalion of Viet Cong. As the aircraft executed a wide sweeping turn over the scene of the fierce fire fight, Colonel Farley detected a group of insurgents moving into fortified positions along the roadway. Without regard for personal safety, he ordered the pilot to begin a low level gun pass over the enemy and skillfully directed the door gunners in the return of highly accurate fire. Suddenly, the hostile force directed a lethal volume of fire on the helicopter, wounding one of the door gunners. Realizing the need of medical attention for the soldier, Colonel Farley directed his aircraft to the nearest landing site. Upon landing he aided in the evacuation of the injured door gunner, boarded an awaiting helicopter, and courageously flew back to the scene of the battle. Demonstrating excellent leadership and aggressive determination, Colonel Farley began to direct the movements of his ground troops while simultaneously adjusting artillery fire on the enemy fortifications. As the enemy began retreating into the dense vegetation, Colonel Farley gallantly landed in order to better direct his forces in the pursuit of the enemy through the heavy undergrowth. Colonel Farley’s extreme courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
