Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 2831 (July 4, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William J. Fambrough, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 15 May 1970, while serving as a Forward Observer with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, while Troop B was established in a night defensive position, it came under attack from an unknown sized enemy force, equipped with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. During the initial moments of contact, Sergeant Fambrough’s armored personnel carrier was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, wounding him in the face, arms, and back. Despite painful wounds, he administered first aid to the other crew members and directed their evacuation. Sergeant Fambrough unhesitatingly began calling artillery in on the suspected enemy positions. As the rounds came in, he exposed himself to the still intense barrage of enemy fire to adjust the artillery. When the armored personnel carrier adjacent to his was struck by an rocket-propelled grenade, Sergeant Fambrough dismounted his vehicle and aided the wounded soldiers to safety. He again returned to his vehicle to adjust the artillery until the enemy positions were silenced. Sergeant Fambrough’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
