The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Irving Schechter (MCSN: 0-7727), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Operations Officer of the First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 16 March 1945. Assigned to command one of the companies when his battalion reorganized after suffering heavy casualties which prevented it from continuing the attack on the night of 8 and 9 March, Major Schechter immediately moved to the front lines and personally supervised the reorganization by absorbing small groups sent him from other units in order to place them in position for a continuation of the attack. Upon receiving orders to resume the attack, he and his runner advanced to a small knoll ahead of the front lines and, personally killing one of the enemy as he fled, aided in driving out several others. From this position, he directed his company which consisted of four officers and one hundred- three enlisted men from four different units of the battalion and led them in an assault over rugged heavily defended terrain which had been holding up the advance of our troops for four days. By his professional ability, courage and devotion to duty, he contributed materially to the success of his battalion and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
