The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Chester W. Kozlowski (ASN: 0-413258), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division on Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 19 December 1944. During an attack against the enemy, First Lieutenant Kozlowski’s platoon was held up by heavy hostile fire. Moving forward over fire-swept terrain, First Lieutenant Kozlowski single-handedly attacked and destroyed two enemy machine gun positions. The elimination of the two enemy strongpoints enabled the platoon to continue the attack and seize its objective. The courageous initiative and zealous devotion to duty displayed by First Lieutenant Kozlowski reflect great credit on himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
