Headquarters, 11th Airborne Division, General Orders No. 23 (February 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward F. Ferguson (ASN: 38534542), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division at Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 7 December 1944. During an attack against the enemy, Private Ferguson, an ammunition bearer in a mortar platoon, was slightly wounded, but refused to be evacuated. When, later in the action, riflemen were needed in the front lines, Private Ferguson voluntarily moved forward to an exposed position and supported the fire of a machine gun. This intrepid soldier remained in this position until he was again wounded. The great courage, initiative, and willingness to be of help above and beyond the call of duty displayed by Private Ferguson set an inspiring example for his unit and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
