The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Hans J. Cohn (ASN: 0-512282), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 11th Airborne Division, on Leyte, Philippine Islands on 6 December 1944. During an attack against the enemy, Captain Cohn repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire to administer medical aid to the wounded. His tireless efforts and professional skill saved the lives of many soldiers. When his battalion was relieved, Captain Cohn personally supervised the evacuation of the wounded, and was the last to leave the scene of action. The great courage, daring initiative, and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Captain Cohn were an inspiration to his unit and reflect great credit upon himself and the military forces of the United States.
