The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald T. Charlton (ASN: 12092312), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 11th Airborne Division on Leyte, Philippine Islands on 25 December 1944. During an engagement with the enemy, Private First Class Charlton moved forward in the face of intense hostile fire to rescue a wounded comrade. While carrying the wounded man to safety, Private First Class Charlton was killed by enemy fire. His great courage and high sense of loyalty exemplify the finest qualities of a soldier and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
