The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel Glen Henry Anderson, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Combat Command R, 5th Armored Division, while leading his command in a mission deep in enemy territory during World War II. The strategic success of Colonel Anderson’s combat command to sever enemy communications deep inside enemy territory depended upon the speed with which the objective was taken. In order to assure the rapid advance of his unit and to exert the maximum effort toward winning the objective quickly, Colonel Anderson, at great personal risk, commanded the entire operation from a position with the forward elements of attack forces. From this exposed position and frequently under enemy fire, Colonel Anderson made instant decisions for the deployment of his troops which otherwise would have slowed the progress of the attack. His leadership, gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
