Headquarters, 95th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 45 (December 14, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade William F. Clark (ASN: 35138150), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Battery A, *** Field Artillery Battalion, 95th Infantry Division, from 8 November 1944 to 9 November 1944, in the vicinity of Uckange, France. A member of an artillery forward observation team, Technician Fifth Grade Clark on the night of 8 November 1944 at the establishment of the Uckange Bridgehead across the Moselle River, laid wire and serviced the lines under terrific artillery, mortar and small arms fire. With complete disregard to personal safety, he twice exposed himself to this fire to repair breaks in the line that had been shot out by enemy shells. Although cautioned by his officer to remain in his foxhole until a lull in the shelling, Technician Fifth Grade Clark went ahead and repaired the broken lines thus keeping communications for a period of thirty-six hours. As a result of these heroic actions, communications were kept open for artillery fire missions and for the reporting by the Infantry to higher echelons, the progress of the action. The maintenance of these lines of communication contributed greatly to the successful establishment of the Uckange Bridgehead. The courage, coolness and extreme devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Clark reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
