The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John J. Martin, Jr. (ASN: 0-441461), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company K, *** Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division from 8 November 1944 to 17 November 1944, in the vicinity of Metz, France. In the Battle of the Slag Pilot Second Lieutenant Martin was wounded in the throat by German shrapnel while leading his platoon against the enemy. After receiving first aid, he returned to his command, pressing the assault. Again Second Lieutenant Martin was hit, this time in the hand. And again, after receiving first aid, he returned to duty. The example set by this valiant officer instilled in his men a spirit of attack that conquered the strong German resistance. Later, in an assault on Fort Gamoetta, Second Lieutenant Martin took command of Company K when the Company Commander was killed and the Executive Officer was wounded, and on this occasion he displayed the same traits of vigorous leadership revealed at the Slag Pile. Second Lieutenant Martin’s conspicuous courage reflects distinct credit upon him and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
