The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles F. Trommetter (ASN: 0-1304820), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company K, *** Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division, on 15 November 1944, in the vicinity of Maiziores-les-Metz, France. In the battle of the Slag Pile, First Lieutenant Trommetter took command of Company K when the Company Commander was wounded. Then, when it became necessary to contact the assault platoon no radio was available so First Lieutenant Trommetter without regard for his personal safety moved down the Slag Pile in the face of heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He climbed upon the lead tank and directed the fire that brought about the collapse of the enemy installations within the village. First Lieutenant Trummetter’s daring action reflects distinct credit upon him and is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
