The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer (CW-2) John L. Enticknap, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 7 September 1969, while serving as an Aircraft Commander with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Warrant Officer Enticknap was flying in the squadron commander’s helicopter when suddenly a large enemy force attacked a disabled armored vehicle and the small security force guarding it. Warrant Officer Enticknap helped to guide the ship down through the intense hail of fire to an area near the contact. He ignored the intense automatic weapons fire directed at the ship as he guided the return suppressive fire. When the ship landed he remained with the ship until the commander returned from organizing a defense. Chief Warrant Officer Enticknap’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
