The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class James Kiernan Vincent (MCSN: 804276), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving as a Squad Leader in a Rifle Platoon of Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. Promptly assuming charge when his platoon leader was struck down in front of friendly lines, Private First Class Vincent led his squad in a determined assault against enemy coastal emplacements along the fiercely-defended shores of Iwo Jima, strategically deploying his men for maximum supporting fire as he courageously crawled to the aid of his leader and carried him to safety. Returning to his squad, Private First Class Vincent, skillfully maneuvering to a position behind a Japanese pillbox while under the protective fire of his team, attacked and killed the hostile gun crew before he himself was mortally wounded. His inspiring leadership, heroic unselfishness and unwavering devotion to duty enhanced the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
