The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) James G. Urquhart (ASN: 0-5425997), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 1 December 1968 while serving with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Lieutenant Urquhart volunteered to pilot a UH-1D helicopter on an emergency night resupply mission to a friendly unit engaged in heavy contact with an enemy force of unknown size. Although he ad radio contact with the ground element, his visibility was limited by the dense jungle and fog. He located what he thought was the friendly position and began the hazardous approach over the jungle without the use of aircraft lights in order not to expose himself to the enemy. He realized, however, on final approach that the small light he was approaching was not the position of the friendly unit and executed an immediate go around narrowly missing several tall trees. On his second pass, he located the platoon and carefully maneuvered his aircraft above the friendly location. L The supplies were lowered by rope as Lieutenant Urquhart skillfully hovered above the treetops, dangerously exposing his aircraft to enemy fire. He repeated this feat a second time before returning to his base camp to stand by in case his assistance should be needed again. First Lieutenant Urquhart’s flying ability, personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
