The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), {then Second Lieutenant) Huber C. Porter (ASN: 0-1997803), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 101st Airborne Division, in action on 19 December 1944, in the vicinity of Norville, Belgium. His company was hastily digging in on the company objective when the enemy attacked with three tanks directly against the position, causing many casualties. Having received an order to withdraw his company, First Lieutenant Porter refused to leave any of his wounded men behind. Ignoring personal danger, he crawled forward into the open and under direct fire from the enemy tanks three times but was forced back, but on his fourth attempt he reached two of his wounded men and succeeded evacuating them to a place of safety. Displaying admirable tenacity and courage he returned once more, although his company had began its withdrawal, and returned with another of his wounded men. Frist Lieutenant Porter’s inspiring leadership, his heroic determination to care for his men, and his devotion to duty are the highest standards of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
