Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 2629 (October 4, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class L. V. Tyler, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in actions while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 3 June 1969 while serving as an assault vehicle driver with Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while the troop and a tank platoon were conducting a reconnaissance operation, the made contact with a well-entrenched enemy company using small arms automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades. As the friendly force assaulted the hostile positions, Specialist Tyler was wounded when a rocket propelled grenade exploded near his vehicle. Nevertheless, he continued maneuvering his assault vehicle through the enemy fusillade until he was wounded a second time by automatic weapons fire. Realizing that he could no longer handle the vehicle effectively, he exchanged positions with one of the gunners. Although he could use only one arm, Specialist Tyler silenced two hostile machine gun emplacements with accurate suppressive fire. He refused to accept medical assistance until the enemy had been defeated and he was ordered to board an evacuation helicopter. Specialist Four Tyler’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
