The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Donald K. Tyler, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 24 June 1970 while serving as helicopter pilot with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a column of armored engineer vehicles was suddenly attacked by an enemy force and several men were wounded. Answering a call to evacuate one of the more seriously wounded, Warrant Officer Tyler landed in stump filled open field near the battle site. Under constant fire, he hovered above the wounded until evacuation to a fire support base could be completed. Returning shortly, he gain removed a man under the same adverse conditions. Warrant Officer Tyler’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
