The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Brett W. Tuttle (ASN: RA-16878337), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 11 January 1969 while serving as a driver of an armored cavalry assault vehicle with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date when one platoon of his troop was attacked by an enemy fore of superior size, Sergeant Tuttle’s vehicle received a direct hit from a rocket propelled grenade round disabling the vehicle and wounding him. Reacting instantly and completely disregarding his wounds, he dismounted his vehicle with a machine gun and his rifle and directed suppressive fire upon the hostile positions. Though he was again wounded by an antitank grenade, he continued to fight undauntedly. When a group of enemy soldiers attempted to overrun an element of the friendly unit, Sergeant Tuttle responded by killing several of the enemy and scattering the rest. Despite the destruction of his machine gun, he did not stop his fierce defense until the enemy positions had been overrun and destroyed. Sergeant Tuttle’s dedication to duty, courage and disregard for his personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
