Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5366 (July 4, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fifth Class Jimmy Tootle (NSN: RA-14831940), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fifth Class Tootle distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 29 January 1968 while serving as a Medical Aidman with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, on a logistical convoy security mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When the convoy’s lead tank struck an enemy mine, sweeping operations were immediately initiated and this resulted in another explosion which injured several soldiers. Disregarding his own personal safety, Specialist Tootle rushed to administer first aid to the casualties. While carrying a litter patient to the evacuation point, Another mine exploded and Specialist Tootle was thrown completely off the path. Despite being dazed by the blast, Specialist Tootle immediately returned to the area and began to treat additional casualties. Retaining his professional composure amid the closing darkness and confusion, Specialist Tootle again organized litter teams and supervised the evacuation. Although numerous mines were suspected to be in the area, Specialist Tootle moved throughout the area to insure that all wounded had been cared for. Through Specialist Tootle’s professional skill and concern for his fellow soldiers many friendly lives were saved. Specialist Fifth Class Tootle’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
