James LaPrade graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1939. He was killed in action during World War II while serving as a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel. His brother James LaPrade was killed in action while serving with U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal, and was subsequently awarded the Navy Cross.
