Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4521 (June 11, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) Thomas H. Timmons (ASN: 0-5241083), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Timmons distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on the evening of 24 January 1968, while serving as an Aircraft Commander with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, on a mission to search the Loc Ninh area of Vietnam for a previously sighted hostile force. During a brief reconnaissance of the suspected hostile area, Lieutenant Timmons directed his pilot to make a low level gun pass, enabling his door gunner to kill the enemy soldiers. When his fire team encountered the main enemy force, two members of the lead aircraft’s crew were wounded and the ship itself received several hits. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Timmons courageously braved the hail of fire to place accurate suppressive fire on the insurgents. As a result of his actions, the enemy suffered many casualties and the lead ship was able to evacuate the wounded from the area. First Lieutenant Timmon’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
