(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Philip Stearns Gage, Jr. (ASN: 0-20337), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, In action against the enemy during the invasion of Normandy, France, in June 1944. Major Gage parachuted behind the Normandy beachhead on 6 June 1944. His unit was badly scattered and dispersed upon landing. Major Gage encountered a German patrol which he engaged in gunfire, and was severely wounded and taken prisoner. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Gage, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
