The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) George H. Thurmond (ASN: 0-93322), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Thurmond distinguished himself by valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander and Fire Team Leader of two UH-1C armed helicopters of the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, during a mission to insert a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol near Dau Tieng, Vietnam. Immediately after the insertion, Captain Thurmond alertly observed a Viet Cong ambush that was awaiting the friendly patrol. Skillfully maneuvering his aircraft directly into the face of the enemy, Captain Thurmond expertly enabled the door gunners to place deadly suppressive fire upon the Viet Cong position. The enemy force, disorganized and bewildered, poured intensive fire in the direction of Captain Thurmond’s helicopter while attempting to flee their positions. In total disregard for his personal safety, Captain Thurmond pressed the attack even though the left door gun had jammed. Skillfully evading hostile fire, he led his team in relentless pursuit until all of the guerrillas were killed or captured. Captain Thurmond’s outstanding flying ability, courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
