The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Gordon Maples (MCSN: 0-11027), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, From 16 to 19 September 1944. With both the commanding and Executive Officers wounded during bitter action against hostile positions, First Lieutenant Maples immediately assumed command of the company and, skillfully reorganizing the men, led a series of vigorous assaults over precipitous ridges despite a pounding barrage of hostile mortar, artillery and machine-gun fire. Pinned down by intense fire from a Japanese fortification during a fierce attack against a vital enemy held ridge on the morning of 19 September, he courageously advanced alone in a daring effort to silence the opposition but was mortally wounded while attempting to hurl a grenade into the embrasure of the hostile emplacement. By his inspiring leadership and great personal valor in the face of grave peril, First Lieutenant Maples contributed materially to the successful advance of his battalion, and his selfless conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
