Private First Class Sweeney distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Mont St. Martin, France, 30 August – 3 September 1918, in for five days establishing and maintaining telephone communication under heavy shell fire.
