By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant William A. Stickles (ASN: 1936240), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Stickles distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action on 7 August 1918, near Fismes, France. While advancing under heavy shell fire several of his comrades were severely wounded. Sergeant Stickles, with absolute disregard of his own safety, carried them to a place of safety where first aid could be administered.
