Smythe (ASN: 1236534), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Smythe distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 109th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Baslieux, Marne, France, 6 September 1918, while cutting lanes through the enemy wire, thus enabling his company to advance.
